Big Morongo Birds

Nestled among the Little San Bernardino Mountains, the desert oasis at Big Morongo Canyon is one of the 10 largest cottonwood and willow riparian habitats in California. The preserve is an internationally-recognized birding site, has been designated as one of the United States’ Important Bird Areas, and is a popular eBird “hotspot”.  Several rare or unusual species are known to nest here, and many other species are abundant during the spring and fall migration seasons.

There is a bird observation area at the Preserve’s Education Center, on the Marsh Trail boardwalk. The area has picnic tables and a covered seating area for visitors, a water feature, hummingbird feeders, and seed feeders. A portable toilet is available, and the location is accessible.

Birds are observed along all the trails, and also at Convington Park, connected to the Preserve on the south side. The Preserve’s trails represent a variety of climates from the high Yucca Ridge trail, the riparian Marsh and Mesquite trails, to the Colorado desert in the Big Morongo Canyon.
