Volunteer Application

Thank you for your interest in volunteering to assist Friends of Big Morongo Canyon Preserve as a registered volunteer for the County of San Bernardino’s Regional Parks. Please indicate your areas of interest on the form below and click on “Submit.” Our volunteer coordinator will contact you with available opportunities!

Kiosk and Visitor ExperienceAmbassador
May include manning a station at the Kiosk or Education Center to make public contacts, including answering general questions about Big Morongo Canyon Preserve and its plant and animal species and providing assistance with special events and staffing info tables. Some positions include processing sales of logo merchandise.
Bird Walk Leader
Must have excellent visual and/or auditory bird identification skills to assist in biweekly bird walks. Walk the trails and help the public with the identification of several species of birds. May assist with statistical analysis of bird count numbers.
Trails and Maintenance
Includes sweeping; picking up litter; installation/maintenance of interpretive signs; clearing the trail of vegetation using a variety of tools including hand pruner and loppers, shovels, McLeods, etc. May also use blowers, weed eaters, mowers, chippers, chainsaws. Must wear proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including gloves and eye protection before using any of these tools.
Education Docents
Attend special training to become a Docent (student tour leader); Participate in outdoor educational programs for school-age children,  Work with the education committee to design engaging, place-based education programs that explore science and cultural history.
Interpretive Hike Leader
Attend training to learn or enhance topic knowledge to lead interpretive hikes on the trails. Must be knowledgeable in the subject matter and be able to answer the public’s questions. May also assist in assessing trail condition and reporting it back to hosts.
Native Plant and Pollinator Garden
Maintain the different gardens, plants, and irrigation systems.  Keep the paths cleared and raked.  Tend to the water feature.
